The Power of Motherhood
On July 30th, 2008 Bryce Burton, son of my business partner and friend Stephanie Burton and her husband Dan, was paralyzed by a resistant strain of staph infection known as MRSA which had attached to his spine. Bryce was immediately flown to Children’s Hospital in Oakland, Ca. and underwent surgery to clean the infection from his L-4 and L-5 vertebrae, which involved their removal, soaking them in a sterile solution, and replacing them.
Pressure and possible damage was incurred to the spinal cord from the pus sack created by the infection.
We at Mercat are producing a fundraiser to help generate income for a fund to make sure Bryce will have every possible option available to him to receive the medical treatment he needs to walk again. I have watched with the eyes of both a mother and a grandmother the ordeal my beloved friends are undergoing and have chosen from my collection ‘The Power of Motherhood’, a giclee to be donated to “The Family House’ at Children’s Hospital. Family House is for families with children in long term care and it’s use is offered for whatever these families can afford by this wonderful facility.
I created the ‘Power of Motherhood’ to show the incredible bond women share with their children and the life changing moment when we first hold that new life.
Bryce is one of the children fortunate enough to have a wonderful and supportive family and circle of friends but many of the children hospitalized are raised and nurtured by single mothers or grandmothers who must endure these hardships alone, and we at Mercat Productions wish to help.
What has happened to Bryce has deeply affected all of us close to him, but on my visits to Children’s Hospital, seeing the suffering endured by all the children and their families touched my heart and will forever affect me. I am creating a piece just for my buddy Bryce, and adding to it three other pieces of my collection that Stephanie and I have chosen together. These pieces will be available for auction or sale at the event and the proceeds will benefit the Bryce Burton fund. 20% of the sale price of any other pieces sold at the fundraiser or on the website will also be donated to the fund.
